The ColorEdge CX240 is a Standard Level ColorEdge screen, this means that it offers many of the quality and performance levels that photographers have come to expect from an EIZO ColorEdge but does not come with a hood, although one is available as an optional extra. The CX240 also doesn't come with the pixel fault warranty that is standard with the CG246 and CG276. It is however an exceptionally good monitor and is very good value for money. The CX240 would be perfect for many serious amateur or professional photographers, or for video post production work. Click here to read PC Pro's review, or here to read NorthLight images review.
Quality
All ColorEdge screens undergo thorough testing and quality control in EIZO’s factory before they are allowed to wear the ColorEdge badge, and the CX240 is no exception. The screens are measured for tonal reproduction, temperature stability and uniformity and any variations compensated for in the advanced circuitry of the monitor. EIZO ColorEdge have a deserved reputation for quality and the CX240 provides that same quality at a lower price point.
Accuracy
EIZO’s ColorNavigator software is very easy to use and access the monitor hardware directly making for easy and accurate calibration. A third party calibrator such as the X-Rite i1 Display Pro must be used. The built-in self-correction sensor only monitors screen brightness in conjunction with ColorNavigator. Once a target is set by ColorNavigator the sensor can monitor the brightness of the display over time and make any required adjustments. This means that the CX240 will be more consistent between full calibrations but also should require them less frequently. Also whereas most monitors require approximately 30 minutes of warming up to fully stabilise the CX240 is ready in just 7 minutes.
EIZO have also added many features to improve the quality of video playback. The HDMI input supports I/P (interlace/progressive) conversion for converting the interlace signals from TV and video into progressive signals for flicker-free display. The overdrive circuit delivers a rapid response time of 7.7 ms. The new LED back-light produces an improved contrast ratio to deliver deeper blacks.
Reliability
EIZO’s commitment to quality is clear from their warranty. All users benefit from a 5 year warranty. Additionally for the ColorEdge range EIZO offer an on-site 'advanced exchange'. This means that EIZO will send a replacement or loan monitor to you and arrange for yours to be taken away for repair. Once fixed, the monitors will be swapped back. I thought long and hard on which monitor to spend my hard-earned on. It was a toss-up between this one Eizo cx240) and the NEC pa241w. The fact I could hardware calibrate the actual monitors' LUT swung it for me. Why formware lock the European NECs'??
Colours and resolution are superb without the text etc. being too hard to read because of their size. Even the preset modes, sRGB etc. are good out of the box. I havent bothered to calibrate these presets but have obviously calibrated the internal LUT one (mode7# CAL).
Instructions are fairly clear and you can always call Native Digital if you're unsure of anything. I am so glad I settled on this monitor, oh, and do buy the i1 Display Pro that is on offer with this monitor at a great price.
